IP (International Protection Rating) is a system of marking the degree of protection against penetration of solids and water provided, for example, by the housing of the luminaire (according to the IEC 60529 standard).
The first digit (IP x0) of the code indicates the extent to which protection is provided against access to dangerous parts (with the risk of health and life) and against the penetration of foreign bodies into the interior (causing interference in the operation of the device).
The second digit of the code (IP 0x) indicates the degree of protection against water ingress.
Tab.1 Degree of protection against solid particles.
First digit | Description |
---|---|
0 | No protection |
1 | Protection against foreign solids and objects with a diameter of 50 mm and larger. |
2 | Protection against foreign solids and objects with a diameter of 12,5 mm and larger. |
3 | Protection against foreign solids and objects with a diameter of 2,5 mm and larger. |
4 | Protection against foreign solids and objects with a diameter of 1 mm and larger. |
5 | Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the safe operation of the equipment. |
6 | Fully dust proof. |
Tab.2 Degree of protection against water
Second digit | Description |
---|---|
0 | No protection. |
1 | Effective against vertically falling drops of water. |
2 | Effective against vertically falling drops of water when the housing is tilted at an angle of 15° from its normal position. |
3 | Effective against the water falling as a spray. |
4 | Effective against the water splashing from any direction. |
5 | Effective against the water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm (0.25 in)) from any direction. |
6 | Effective against the water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm) from any direction. |
7 | Protected against the effects of short-term immersion in water. |
8 | Protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water. |
9 | Protected against close-range high-pressure (80-100 bars), high-temperature (+80 °C) spray downs. |
